The Watling Walk: Nurturing wellbeing and camaraderie at Watling Medical Centre

In the heart of Burnt Oak, Edgware, nestled across the road from Watling Park, lies Watling Medical Centre, a beacon of community health and well-being. As a General Practitioner here, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of a simple yet profound tradition hitherto referred to as “The Watling Walk.” Every day, after our morning surgery, we gather members of our team for a 15-minute walk around Watling Park. This daily ritual, initiated over 10 years ago by our esteemed predecessor Dr. Sanjiv Ahluwalia, has become an integral part of our practice, fostering relaxation, mental well-being, and team spirit.

Dr. Ahluwalia, whose legacy we proudly carry forward, recognised the need for respite amidst the demanding environment of a GP surgery. He envisioned a brief yet effective way to help the staff decompress after the morning’s rigors. Thus, ‘The Watling Walk’ was born. The idea was simple: a short walk in the park to clear our heads, engage in light-hearted conversation, and bond with colleagues. Over the years, this practice has not only endured but flourished, becoming a cherished tradition that strengthens our team dynamics and overall mental health.

General Practice is inherently stressful, and we often grapple with emotional and physical exhaustion.

General Practice is inherently stressful, and we often grapple with emotional and physical exhaustion. The Watling Walk provides a much-needed sanctuary, a brief escape from the clinical setting into the embrace of nature. The greenery and surprising tranquillity of Watling Park act as a balm, soothing our minds and revitalising our spirits. This daily interaction with nature and the gentle exercise that comes with it helps with our mental health, reducing stress levels and fostering a sense of calm and relaxation.

Beyond its therapeutic benefits, the Watling Walk really does foster team spirit and camaraderie. During these walks, we engage in conversations that transcend work-related matters. We discuss our personal lives, share anecdotes, and offer support to one another. These interactions help us understand each other better, building stronger interpersonal relationships and a cohesive team. The walk is an opportunity to break down professional barriers and connect on a human level. Unfortunately, these walks have still not persuaded one of my colleagues to give up on Eastenders.

The positive impact of the Watling Walk extends beyond our immediate team. Our trainees, inspired by this tradition, have attempted to introduce similar practices in their new placements. On one memorable occasion, a colleague led the trainees on a tutorial walk through Watling Park, despite the uncertain weather. Although they returned soaked, they were still smiling and had managed to continue the tutorial. The resounding learning point being preparedness for any eventuality.

The Watling Walk is more than just a daily stroll; it is a lifeline that nurtures our mental well-being…

In addition to our daily walks, we strive to maintain an active social calendar at Watling Medical Centre. Every year, we organise a Watling Hike or run, bringing together staff and their families for a day of outdoor activity and bonding. These events have taken us to various parks, including Cassiobury Park in Watford, Regent’s Park, and even the Seven Sisters Walk. This year, our hike through Cassiobury Park culminated in a family sports day, filled with laughter, fun, and cherished memories. These events not only promote physical fitness but also strengthen the sense of community within our practice. A special mention must be given to our youngest partner, Dr Amit Shah who has prioritised the mental and physical health of our team by spearheading all these endeavours.

As I reflect on the journey of the Watling Walk, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude and pride. This simple tradition has woven itself into the fabric of our daily lives, enhancing our well-being and unity. It is a testament to the collective commitment of our entire team to prioritise mental health and camaraderie. As we continue to uphold this tradition, I am confident that it will endure well beyond my tenure, enriching the lives of future generations at Watling Medical Centre.

In conclusion, the Watling Walk is more than just a daily stroll; it is a lifeline that nurtures our mental well-being, strengthens our team bonds, and reinforces the values of compassion and balance in our professional lives. As a GP at Watling Medical Centre, I am privileged to be part of a tradition that exemplifies the best of what we stand for – a commitment to health, community, and enduring camaraderie. May the Watling Walk continue to inspire and uplift, fostering a legacy of well-being and unity for years to come.
