2026 is here! Happy new year from BJGP Life!

1 January 2026

Andrew Papanikitas is Deputy Editor of the BJGP. He is on X: @gentlemedic and Bluesky: @gentlemedic.bsky.social

It has been an interesting year – with added emphasis on the different practical meanings of ‘interesting’ for our readers and contributors. And yet if you scroll through the articles on Life in 2025 you will see another year of vibrant  primary healthcare writing and colleagues doing inspiring things and sharing inspiring ideas. The main ‘Wassail for 2026’ comes tomorrow on Jan 2nd as our January BJGP is published. Today however, I’d like to pick up on one idea doing the rounds last year, Moral Ambition, a term coined by Rutger Bregman. Bregman is a Dutch journalist, historian, and author who was the 2025 BBC Reith Lecturer. We aired  Terry Kemple’s review of Moral Ambition (the book) yesterday.1 Kemple writes, “The world has no shortage of serious problems. The real question is: what are you going to do about it? Perhaps the first step is simply to start thinking differently—and to begin.” That makes for wonderfully open ended, challenging and yet achievable new year’s resolution.

Thanks to all of our contributors, and welcome to writers new and old!

The primary goal of BJGP Life and BJGP Life &Times is to develop a BJGP community — a virtual agora, the forum of classical times that translates across time and space as the debating room, the public house, the workplace coffee room, or the exchange of ideas over the corridor water-cooler.

As 2026 dawns, on behalf of BJGP Life, I would like to thank all of our contributors, both regular and occasional. You have challenged, informed and supported us. We have enjoyed work from household names in British and international general practice and welcomed new writers. Thank you.

To those thinking, ‘Could I write a Life article?’ please come in and have a look around. Then find the submission guidance2 (see below) and have a go!

A Christmas wish from BJGP Life

Merry Christmas from BJGP Life. This year I'd like to focus on the idea that medicine, and general practice in particular, might be an engine of peace, and instrument of health and wellbeing. 'Thoughts and Prayers' embodied in meaningful professional activity.

A song for the haunting season

"Whether the articles in this month make you feel nostalgic, spur you into action, or help you to hear a hitherto hidden voice calling for help, I invite you to be gently haunted ..."

In summer!

"As ever, the articles in Life and Times tell a story, a meta-narrative that shares present realities, draws on the past, and attempts to speculate on the future ..."

Stay in your lane?

If the goal of medicine is the promotion of health and treatment of disability, illness, and disease (let’s think of this as our lane?), then things are going to get complicated.

An Easter egg from BJGP Life

'To find the Easter egg in a movie you often have to wade through the credits, which lengthen in proportion to the CGI special effects and lavish locations...' Some Easter reflections and highlights.
